巴拉德的原创风格还无人能够模仿，其大胆的文字也使得他与各种大奖无缘。在七十三岁时，他从容拒绝了大英帝国勋章。但这些并不妨碍他的作品影响了包括Joy Divison和Burial在内的两代音乐人，并在三十年的跨度中被风格迥异的导演们搬上银幕。
十五岁离开上海之后，除了偶尔出门度假，他的后半生是在平静的英国小镇谢珀顿度过的。妻子在1964年因急病去世之后，他独自给三个孩子做饭和熨烫校服，送他们去上学，将他们抚养成人。当孩子们玩耍时，他在书房中重访自己不寻常的童年记忆，探索人类社会和心灵中那些最黑暗的角落。“心理医生已经帮不了这本书的作者了。”这是当年一位读者对试读版《撞车》的著名评价。巴拉德的回应是：“假如一位心理医生说‘心理医生已经帮不了你了’——从某种意义上说，这是你能得到的最佳赞赏。你已经抵达了自由——绝对的自由。”[47]
